'Joker 2': First look at Lady Gaga in costume as Harley Quinn
Photos from the filming of the movie 'Joker: Folie à Deux' have been released, giving us the first look at a fully made-up Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn
Although the film won't hit theaters until October 2024, Todd Phillips' Joker: Folie à Deux has been in production for some time, and unofficial set photos reveal Lady Gaga's final look as Harley Quinn. Given the atmosphere of the Phillips films, the makeup on Gaga's Harley Quinn is much more subtle and down-to-earth compared to Margot Robbie's stylized look as the same character in earlier DC films.
The first DC Elseworlds movie
Phillips' Joker sequel will be the first film to be released under the new 'DC Elseworlds' label, followed a year later by Batman 2. This Elseworlds label is for those DC projects outside of James Gunn's new DCU continuity, and until further notice, Robbie's Harley Quinn is still the official DC version of the character.
Expectations are high for Phillips' film, which is described as a semi-musical and revolves around Joaquin Phoenix as Arthur Fleck, aka the Joker, who is treated at Arkham Hospital by Dr. Harleen Quinzel, who later adopts the name Harley Quinn.
Zazie Beetz is set to reprise her role as Sophie Drummond, who was the object of Arthur's affections in the first film, while Brendan Gleeson joins the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role.
Lady Gaga and Joaquin Phoenix are a great combination to attract the crowd
Given that
Joaquin Phoenix for the role in the first Joker movie won an Oscar which means that Gaga's role is heavily hyped and a big Oscar campaign can be expected for both her and Phoenix if the film turns out as expected. Gaga seems like an excellent choice for the role because apart from being a mega-successful musician, her movies know how to draw audiences to theaters. For example, "House of Gucci" is a rare drama aimed at an adult audience that achieved great results during the pandemic, while most other films aimed at an older audience failed.
Phillips also produced her 2018 remake of „A Star is Born“, which was her first major role. The director and lead actor from that film, Bradley Cooper, is the producer of the new Joker.
