Hollywood directors nominated Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović for the best debut director
DGA included Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović among the five nominees for the award in the category of best debutant.
Compliments from colleagues are always the hardest to get, which is probably why they are the sweetest. Dubrovnik director Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović, on the other hand, received enormous praise from Hollywood directors. She was nominated for the best debutante.
The nominations for the Directors Guild of America Awards were announced. It is a trade union association that looks after the interests of all directors working in the USA. With more than 15,000 members, it is extremely influential in Hollywood, and their annual award is one of the most prestigious.
Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović was nominated with the film Murina in the category of best debut director of a cinema film. She will fight for the award in strong competition with colleagues Alice Diop, Audrey Diwan and Charlotte Wells and colleague John Patton Ford.
The nomination for the DGA award is just a continuation of the excellent autumn/winter season for Murina and Antoneta Alamat Kusijanović. The film has three nominations for the Independent Spirit Award, while it was nominated in two categories for the Gotham Awards. The director did not manage to win the Gotham award, but that's why it went to the main actress Gracija Filipović, who triumphed in the category of best young hope.
Murina had its world premiere in 2021 at the Cannes Film Festival. The family drama was screened as part of the program "15 Days of Authors" (Quinzaine des Réalisateurs), and it returned home with the Golden Camera, the award for the best debut film. Last year, Croatia missed the chance to send Murina as its candidate for the Oscar.
Produced by Martin Scorsese
Along with Gracija Filipović, the film also stars Leon Lučev, Danica Ćurčić, Cliff Curtis and Jonas Smulders. Murina was produced by Zagreb's Antitalent and Brazilian-American RT Features, with co-production by Spiritus Movens, SPOK Production and Staragara. One of the executive producers of the film is the famous director Martin Scorsese.
And while female directors dominated among debutantes, all nominations for the best director of a cinema film went to men. Nominees include Todd Field (Tár), Joseph Kosinski (Top Gun: Maverick), Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin) and Steven Spielberg (The Fabelmans).
You can read who was nominated in all categories on the DGA website.
The winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on February 18 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.
