1917 was the big winner of the last night's BAFTAs
Did the British Academy awards confirm Oscar favourites?
"The glamour, the excitement, the length." –were the words used by the host Graham Norton to usher us into the last night's BAFTAs. The award ceremony is the final predictor of the Oscars, but surprises were few if any, and only confirmed the established frontrunners list for the LA ceremony that will be held on February 10th.
The Academy members gave the acting awards to Renee Zellweger, Joaquin Phoenix, Laura Dern, and Brad Pitt – all of them have also won Golden Globes and SAG awards for this year’s performances. And while Once Upon a Time… and The Irishman picked up 10 nominations each, they were pretty much ignored by the British voters.
1917 was the winner of the evening. Sam Mendes’ WWI drama won 7 awards, out of 9 nominations, including the one for Best Film and Outstanding British Film, as well as the award given out for the best director. The team behind Parasite was honored in the category dedicated to films that are not in the English language, while the winning animated film was Klaus – the English-language Spanish comedy that tells its version of the Santa Claus origin.
